Liverpool-based CIC harnesses the power of Reiki to Mpower mothers and carers into work

Mothers and carers are ‘learning to love themselves’ as they leap into the world of work, thanks to an exclusive initiative set up by one of Liverpool’s leading grassroot organisations.

The Returner Project, funded by the Government Equalities Office, was set up by Mpower People CIC last year.

Aimed at women, the project seeks to support parents and carers who have been out of work for over 18 months.

Members of The Returners Project are given the opportunity to try out multiple holistic therapies throughout their time on the scheme, such as Reiki.

The Returner Project reaches out to prospective employers in an attempt to address the stigma surrounding women’s issues of employment, and subsequently prepares individuals for the world of work.

“These people are role models to their children, so we want them to be able to prove to their children, even as single mums, that they are going to have a fantastic career, flexible, around their own needs and their own commitments.”

However, the thing that separates the project from other initiatives in the city is how The Returner Project prioritises individual mental health and well-being, giving participants a vital opportunity to ‘recharge their energy batteries.’

Michelle Smith, CEO of Mpower People CIC, explains: “When you have been a parent or carer, you are so focused on giving all your love, all your care, all your attention to the person who you’re caring for, and you don’t take time for yourself.

“It’s about raising aspirations, because we want to create long-term, sustainable careers.

MPower People CIC is situated in The Gateway Conference Centre along London Road in Liverpool, and is open Monday to Thursday, from 10am – 4pm.
