Suspect arrested after “unprovoked and callous attack” on New Brighton jogger

Merseyside Police has arrested a suspect after a jogger was attacked by two males with wooden planks in an “unprovoked and callous attack” along New Brighton Promenade this morning.

The victim, a man in his 50s, has been jogging nearby New Brighton’s Black Pearl when he was attacked by two men with pieces of wood.

Officers and emergency services received reports of the incident at about 7:25am, and the victim was taken to hospital with head injuries.

A suspect from Wallasey was since been arrested on suspicion of a Section 18 assault. Following extensive local enquiries, the suspect has since been taken to a police station for questioning.

However, CCTV and witness enquiries are still ongoing. As a result, Merseyside Police are asking any potential witnesses to come forward.

Detective Inspector Darren Taylor told Mersey Community News : “This was an unprovoked and callous attack against a man who was taking a run along the promenade early this morning.

“It is believed that the suspect was with another male and ran up towards Tower Grounds after the attack.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish what has led up the incident and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area around 7.15am who saw anything or has any information to get in touch.”
